PCI Express

PCI Express (Peripheral component Interconnect Express), often abbreviated as PCIe, is an industry-standard serial protocol that offers high bandwidth communication links from computing, embedded and custom host processors to ‘end-point’ peripherals like Ethernet, USB, Video, Storage and other types of peripherals.

PCIe offers several improvements over the specifications that preceded it, such as PCI and PCI-X. By moving to a serial interface, fewer pins are required for a PCIe connection than previously required for PCI and PCI-X. In addition, with its faster clock capabilities, PCIe delivers much higher data rates as follows: Gen1 at 2.5 GT/s, Gen2 at 5.0 GT/s and Gen 3 at 8 GT/s.
